Tumbling/Gymnastics
In grades Pre-Kindergarten through grade two, basic tumbling
skills are introduced, reinforced and practiced in a variety of
stations/activities. The basic skills
include: log roll, egg roll, rocking chair roll and forward roll.
In grades three and four, continuation of the forward roll, in
increasing levels of challenge, is continued.
Backward rolls, tripods, head stands, mule kicks and cartwheels are a
few of the skills introduced and practiced at these grade levels.
In grades three and four, basic gymnastic skills are
introduced. Balance beam skills include
dip walks, front scales, and dismounts are introduced and practiced. The parallel bar skills that are introduced
and practiced include: arm walks, straddle walks, arm swings, dismounts and
inverted shapes. The horizontal bar (high bar) skills that are introduced and
practiced include: front arm support, tuck and roll, arm swings and inverted
shapes.
Each skill is practiced in assorted levels of challenge,
with students selecting the station that is motivating to them, student choice.
Examples of these levels of challenge include rolling down incline mats, across
floor mats, across crash mats, under bars, between obstacles, over bars and up
incline mats.

The safety rules for Tumbling/Gymnastics are:
Walk around mats to travel.
Line up at a cone, only one person on a mat at a time.
Always protect your head and neck when doing rolls. Never put weight on your head!
Land safely on two feet when dismounting.
